This free training held at the King offices in London is a unique opportunity to join King developers in learning the game engine Defold. Learn and build together,  enjoy some complimentary food and drinks, share experiences and have a good time. Please read through the general info below to make sure you arrive prepared.

Who is this for?
Developers who want to make better games. Developers working in the games industry or students working towards doing so. You don't need any prior experience in Defold for the training, but you should have some experience in making games.

What you will learn
Defold is a powerful tool used for professional game production. We will provide you with hands-on experience, allowing you to continue to explore and learn Defold by yourself. After the training, you will have a good understanding of the core concepts of Defold and know your way around the editor and be able to create simple prototypes based on your own ideas.

About Defold
Defold is a cross platform game engine for creating high performing 2D games. It's used in several projects within King and by a growing number of indie developers. It is completely free of charge to use for building and publishing games.

Please note that we have a limited capacity for this event in order to provide great training and on-site support. If you want to attend, make sure to register as soon as possible. Last day to register is Tuesday 24th.

General info

Before the event, sign up for Defold and download the editor at  http://www.defold.com. Make sure to bring your laptop to the event!

If you don't have any experience with Lua, the scripting language used in Defold, make sure to spend some time here before the event.

There is no parking onsite. Nearest stations are Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Circus (4min distance). Please note that you must be at least 18 years old to attend the event.

Food and drink will be served free of charge. Make sure to note any dietary requirements as you register.

Friday 

Meet-and-greet at King's office in London. Dinner and drinks will be served!

17:30-18:00 – Meet and greet + Food and drinks

18:00-20:00 – Defold Introduction
We will walk you through some core concept of Defold and show what can be done and how things work.

20:00-21:00 – Mingle
Get a chance to get to know your fellow students and coaches.

Saturday 

One-day workshop which will give you a crash course in Defold. We will provide you with sample projects and clear tasks in order to get you efficiently into the Defold mindset. On-site support and love will get you through the day.

09:00–10:00 – Registration, morning coffee

10:00–12:30 – Intro and 3 challenges workshop
We will provide you with three small Defold projects together with defined tasks that you need to complete. At the end of each challenge, we will guide you through one possible solution and conduct a brief Q&A.

12:30 – Lunch is served

13:00–17:00 – Open workshop
Continue with the sample projects or make something unique. On-site support will keep you from hitting a wall.

Meet the coaches

Mikael Säker

Mikael Säker has been working professionally in the videogames industry since 2002, primarily as a writer and game designer on titles such as "Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay", "The Darkness" and the last few "Battlefield" games.

He is currently working in King's Defold team as a technical writer, designer and developer

Björn Ritzl

Björn has been creating and playing games ever since he got his first C64 30 years ago. He's currently Lua and Defold expert at King, and has been working as a professional software engineer for 15 years. His first mobile game was released in 2004 (back when Motorola Razr was the shit), and is a strong advocate for open source as well as an active contributor to many open source projects.
